What is Clearing?

Clearing is an application opportunity for students looking to secure an undergraduate place at a university after the UCAS deadline.

You might apply through Clearing if:

  • you achieved different grades than you were expecting
  • you changed your mind about your offer in favour of a different university or course
  • you didn’t receive any offers from a university
  • you missed the UCAS deadline and haven’t already applied.

When does Clearing take place?

Clearing runs until October 2025, but may close sooner if our vacancies are filled before then.

Most people associate Clearing with A-level results day, which in England, Northern Ireland and Wales is on Thursday 14 August 2025.

This is the busiest day for Clearing applications as it’s when the majority of people receive their grades, however you can apply before A-level results day using predicted grades if you wish, or if you already have your grades.

How do I apply through Clearing?

Our 2025 undergraduate Clearing vacancies are now live and open for applications. You can either apply before A-level results day through Priority Clearing, or from results day onwards.

Applying before results day (Priority Clearing)

Priority Clearing is an opportunity to apply for a place through Clearing before A-level results day.

You can apply online for Priority Clearing course vacancies until 9am on Monday 4 August, whether you have your results or not. We may close Priority Clearing sooner if our available vacancies are filled.

If you already have your results, we’ll review your application and contact you to discuss whether we are able to offer you a place to join us in September.

If you don’t yet have your results, you can apply to be considered for a place using your predicted grades. We'll prioritise your application and will contact you on results day to discuss your achieved grades and whether we can make you a formal offer.

Applying on or after results day

Our full list of Clearing course vacancies will be published in August. Register your interest to receive updates and be among the first to know when the full list is available.

If you want to wait until you get your results on Thursday 14 August, you’ll be able to phone our Clearing call centre from 8am onwards on results day to speak to us about being considered for a place through Clearing.

We’ll update our website with information about contacting our Clearing call centre on results day closer to the time.

If you haven't made a UCAS application this year, you’ll need to register with UCAS and submit an application before you enquire about a course through Clearing at Leeds. UCAS will give you a Personal ID number to use when talking to universities.

If you've already made a UCAS application this year, you can find your ID number in your UCAS account.
