Scholarships

“My scholarship has allowed me to study without the stresses I’ve faced through childhood and adolescence,” Josh said.

Josh grew up in a single parent household. He spent time in care, living with relatives, and in a women and children’s refuge. He always dreamt of going to university, but knew the financial burden made it more challenging to do so.

“When I found out I had been awarded a scholarship to study at Leeds it felt great,” Josh said. “I told my mum, and we were both so happy.

“Knowing I have the support of donors gave me a great sense of belonging at Leeds.”

The scholarship allowed Josh to focus on his studies. Josh achieved the grades he needed to switch course to Politics with Parliamentary Studies after his first year.

He also enrolled on the Plus Programme, a scheme to support students who come from backgrounds that are less represented at university. It provides a space for participants to connect with other students and access exclusive opportunities and funding to enhance their experience at Leeds.

As part of his course, Josh undertook a placement with MP Rachel Reeves’ team. “It was an amazing experience. Thanks to the scholarship, I was able to afford travel and smart clothes for the interviews. I managed Rachel’s inbox, corresponded with MPs, constituents and businesses, and assisted with briefings and policy research.

“The placement made me feel even more determined to succeed, especially when Rachel became the UK’s first ever female Chancellor.”

Josh dreams of becoming a policy advisor and helping to shape policy decisions which will have a positive impact on peoples’ lives.

“My mum and I can’t thank the donor and supporter community enough for helping me follow my dream at Leeds.”
